Quay Families

Families take us to places we never expected to visit. Once my husband and I took our children and his parents on road trip without telling them where we were going. Each day on the roads through Texas, New Mexico, and Colorado brought new surprises, for them and for us. Those same roads eventually brought us home, worn out and happy to be together.

Families take us deeper, sometimes into delight and sometimes into despair, than we ever expect. In a fitting coincidence, this family issue was long-delayed by a trip into illness in my own family. A year and more time with doctors than one ever wants, but we came out of it intact, just like we came home from the road trip, worn out and happy to be together.

In this issue, I hope the two little girls skipping rope on the cover start you thinking. Are they twins or best friends forever? Family born or family meant to be? Some of us are born into families and some of us make our own.

And in the following pages, our authors take us into the heart of stories about families.
