Submission DeadlinesOur goal is to publish two issues a year, online and in print. NewPages call Quay "An interesting new journal that opts for the quirky and unusual without sacrificing substance." And we're looking for more of the same, substantial fiction that isn't afraid to be unusual or quirky. Unusual or quirky? Quay? And what is Quay? We've been having this very same conversation ourselves, and we think our authors can define it for us. Technically, a wharf where ships are docked, also a resting place or jumping off point before moving on to somewhere else, but we'd be interested to see how our authors define Quay. We won't even begin to ask you how to pronounce it!
Submission GuidelinesSubmit electronically please. For fiction and nonfiction include the text in the body of the email message. IF you are submitting a multimedia piece that includes artwork, the artwork must be a separate file from the text. Quay asks for first serial rights (electronic and print) and the right to keep your work in our archives; all other rights revert back to the author after publication. We also ask that authors mention that their work first saw publication in Quay in any future reprints. Limits: One (1) story fewer than 7500 words. Flash fiction, 1-3 pieces no more than 1000 words each. Single chapter from a larger piece - please include 1 page synopsis for entire work. Please, put author's name, title of piece, and email address on every page. Limits: Three (3) poems or six (6) pages of poetry, OR one (1) story fewer than 7500 words, OR one (1) work of nonfiction/memoir fewer than 7500 words, OR one (1) play or screenplay fewer than 1500 words. Please, put author's name, title of piece, and email address on every page. Artwork: If you are planning a multi-media submission or submissions of paintings, drawings, or photographs, please contact the Editor-in-Chief regarding file formats and number. Translation: Quay is interested in publishing translated works, if accompanied by approval of the author of the original. Please contact the Editor-in-Chief regarding translations. Quay is an ad-free environment. We do not get paid for doing this. Artists cannot get paid for having their work featured here. If you would like to be notified of upcoming issue themes and deadlines, please consider joining our Mail Call List. How to SubmitSend submissions addressed to the Editors of Fiction, Nonfiction, Memoir, Poetry, Dramatic Writing (click on editorial title to reach email address). Include "Poetry/Fiction/Non-fiction Submission" in the subject line of email. If submitting in more than one genre, send separate e-mails for each genre and label each accordingly. At Quay we have no intention of publishing your work based on what or where you have published in the past. Upon acceptance, we will request a brief bio and you are welcome to list previous publications. Response time is typically two-three months. Simultaneous submissions are completely understandable (we are authors, too), but please let us know as soon as possible if your work is accepted elsewhere. Please wait three months before querying. If you are submitting a paper copy, enclose a SASE with your submission and with any subsequent inquiries. If you MUST submit a hard copy please understand it will take longer to process. INCLUDE YOUR EMAIL ADDRESS and mail it to: Quay |
